Herodes’ Palace

After my two weeks travel in Jordan I still have so many pictures and paintings in my head, not just those I sketched, while I was there.

These are the remains of Herodes’ Palace in Makuwir, near Makaba. Because of the great view to the Dead Sea and the areas around that place always seemed very interesting.

Built in 90 BC the Romans destroyed it in 57 CB and Herodes the Great rebuilt it. His son was married to a Nabathean princess, but fell in love with his niece Herodias who was married to one of his halfbrothers.

John the Babtist concemned the adultery and was imprisioned by Herodes the Great. As revenge Herodias called her daughter Salome from a former marriage to dance in front of her lover’s birthday guests.

Herodes himself was so pleased that Salome made him to behead John the Baptist and offer his head on a plate to her cf. Matthew 14:3-11.

Today just a few columns and some walls remain.

Tree Sketches in Spring

Driving through the studio you sometimes find some demos. This is one on the right from the workshop in March. It was already quite warm, but the colours were still so “wintery” and just a few leaves were on the trees so that you couldn’t see them in the far, however, the gras shows its best already.

On the left you see more leaves, but they are brown and yellow, just very small with little leaf green.

The first daffodils bloom in the gras, but the trees still look very different from oneanother.
