Herodes’ Palace

After my two weeks travel in Jordan I still have so many pictures and paintings in my head, not just those I sketched, while I was there.

These are the remains of Herodes’ Palace in Makuwir, near Makaba. Because of the great view to the Dead Sea and the areas around that place always seemed very interesting.

Built in 90 BC the Romans destroyed it in 57 CB and Herodes the Great rebuilt it. His son was married to a Nabathean princess, but fell in love with his niece Herodias who was married to one of his halfbrothers.

John the Babtist concemned the adultery and was imprisioned by Herodes the Great. As revenge Herodias called her daughter Salome from a former marriage to dance in front of her lover’s birthday guests.

Herodes himself was so pleased that Salome made him to behead John the Baptist and offer his head on a plate to her cf. Matthew 14:3-11.

Today just a few columns and some walls remain.

Goodies

Sometimes it’s even nice to paint a tiniy thing into your calendar before giving it to the ladies attending the workshop.

I guess the small painting is bigger than the original.

Prepared for the Workshop

You never know how the weather would be like when you announce a workshop for summer and especially in the garden.

Better you prepare for sunny and for rainy weather or better also for a day full of rain. How? I must confess I’m so lucky to have a kind of panorama window to the garden. That makes a relieving feeling when it comes to weather.

So, I got prepared and did some sketches in advance not knowing with which materials the girls would turn up. So, I mixed them, coloured pencils with watercolour pencils and fineliners, always the real subjects in sight.

In the end I was well prepared with some paper to remember learned things and some goodies that are nice to have as well as being of big help when you paint or draw outside or from the garden atelier with a great look outside.
